Swim Safe

Last Week Tracy from swim safe came to Paihia School to explain to us about boat safety and swim safety. She told us about the important equipment to have on a boat. We learned that there are five rules that keep you safe on a boat, and five rules to keep you safe at the beach. Next time when my family goes out on a boat I am going to remind them to where their life jacket.

Rugby World Cup

In the past week we have been learning about the rugby world cup. First we had to find out which 20 countries are competing. Then we needed to find out what each country's rugby team nickname is. Afterwards we had to find out what their emblem was and find a picture of it. My favourite nickname is the “Brave Blossoms” from Japan. What is yours?

Paper Tower

In Te Ngahere on the first day back at School we did a Steam challenge.
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and
Mathematics. We were learning to collaborate and work well with our

learning peers. We were also learning how to problem solve and use
limited material to build A tower.  We had to made a tower made out of
only, 2 sheets of newspaper and 30 cm of tape and we could not use
scissors to cut the tape and newspaper. We also only got twenty minutes
to plan and make the tower. When we got in to our groups we made a
plan. Our plan was to make our tower so it looked like a space telescope.
We built our tower like this because we thought that it would make it as tall
as possible and it would make it very steady. Making a plan for the tower
was hard but building the tower was easy. After we built our tower we had
to bring it to the front of the class and balance it and then the teacher
measured our them. If the  tower fell over it did not count. Our tower was
1 m and 8cm tall !! Next time we make a tower out of newspaper we will
put things on the side of the tower to help keep it up.

I found that  having a big base on our tower worked well and  what did not
work well was having nothing to help hold up the tower. I worked well with
my group. I also worked well and hard on the tower.
I got my tower image from  the teachers when they took photos of us with
our towers. Have you ever had a Steam challenge ?
